Staff reduction spurs museum to close Sundays, open Mondays

The Johnson County Museum has a case of the Mondays — and facility leaders hope that will be a good thing. As of Wednesday, the museum, 6305 Lackman Road, is closed on Sundays but open on Mondays instead, adding three more hours of operation to its weekly schedule but eliminating the need for employees to come in on Sundays.

Annual Old Shawnee Days festival kicks off summer

Amos family matriarch chosen as 2011 grand marshall

A look around Shawnee Town 1929 — which draws thousands of visitors each year during Old Shawnee Days — reveals a number of achievements Margaret Amos had a hand in. She helped the effort to move the historic Hart farmhouse from 75th Street and Quivira Road to Shawnee Town, her daughter Amy Ruo said. She helped save and rebuild the jail and helped stock the undertaker’s parlor with museum pieces. When Shawnee Town Hall was under construction, she helped supply meals for the workers.

Parade honors 150 years of statehood

The Old Shawnee Days Parade is one of the largest in the state of Kansas. Awards will be given in categories including Most Spirit, Most Creative, Best Kids Entry, Most Unique Vehicle and Best Vehicle Group. The “Grand Marshal’s Award” will be presented to the unit that best depicts the parade theme and the “Mayor’s Award” will be presented to the best overall unit.

Rolle bolle tournament to again crown state champion

It’s a Belgian tradition to play rolle bolle and an American tradition to butcher its name. So says Dennis Busby of the Shawnee Sister Cities Committee. On Saturday at 1 p.m., Busby and dozens of others will compete in the 15th annual rolle bolle double-elimination tournament at Sister Cities Park on the corner of Johnson Drive and King Street.

Master Gardeners on hand at Shawnee Town gardens to explain their handiwork

The Johnson County Extension Master Gardeners designed and maintain the gardens at Shawnee Town 1929. You will find them working the gardens on Friday mornings from April through October. They also staff the gardens to answer visitor’s questions at special events like Old Shawnee Days. Many visitors return to the gardens each year to see the changes and receive ideas for their own gardens.

Bloody Mary party is June 1

Shawnee Town 1929 has planned its Bloody Mary Roll-Out Party for 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the town gazebo, 11501 W. 57th St. The evening is planned to celebrate Shawnee Town 1929 and kick off the annual Tomato Roll Fundraiser. Cost is $25 per person, which includes two balls for entry in the tomato roll.

"Day in the Park" activities return to Shawnee Mission

“A Day in the Park” is back this summer, with a bevy of free activities planned June 4, at Shawnee Mission Park. The Johnson County Park and Recreation District is offering free admission to park beaches, free pedal boat and canoe rentals and free fishing permits. The event coincides with the district’s and the state’s free fishing weekend, during which fishing and boating permits are waived.

Tons of sand, creative vision to highlight new event

By first thing Friday morning, three days’ worth of deliveries will have deposited 135 tons of sand outside Wonderscope Children’s Museum, 5705 Flint St. By the time the air horn blows at 4 p.m., dozens of hands will have transformed the sand into jumbo sculptures ranging from the Death Star to Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz.” At least that’s the plan for Sand in the City, coming this weekend to Shawnee.

Visitors bureau names “Good Starts Here” award winner

The Shawnee Convention & Visitors Bureau named Donna Sawyer the 2011 recipient of its “Good Starts Here Award” this week. Sawyer, who serves as chairwoman of the Old Shawnee Days Society, accepted the award Wednesday, May 11, during the annual Shawnee Tourism Celebration luncheon at Shawnee Town Hall. Sawyer is the third person to receive the award, presented for outstanding service to Shawnee tourism.

Truck Farm re-creates city’s agricultural roots

Ramie DeGraeve has heard his father talk about life on a Shawnee truck farm, at least the snippets he could recall from elementary school age. Truck gardening — particularly by Belgian immigrants like the DeGraeves — was a major fixture of Shawnee’s landscape in the 1920s. Now Ramie DeGraeve, as Shawnee’s parks and facilities manager, is partially responsible for re-creating that landscape in the Shawnee Town 1929 Truck Farm, which opens to the public next week for its first sneak-peek tours.

The Old Shawnee Days Committee has announced this year’s theme, as well as the creation of a new award category for participants of the annual Old Shawnee Days Parade, set for June 4. The theme — a tribute to the state’s sesquicentennial — is “150 Years of Kansas Pride.” The new award will go to the best entry by a neighborhood association.
