U.S. Chamber Awards Shawnee Chamber of Commerce with 4-Star Accreditation
The United States Chamber of Commerce today awarded the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce with 4-Star Accreditation for its sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community.

Pioneer Crossing Park Dedicated
Amid several jokes about the long process to complete Pioneer Crossing Park, the city officially dedicated the park Thursday September 20th , complete with its three-dimensional mural, wagon master statue and informational plaques. Though the city had originally hoped to dedicate the park in February 2006, a tribute to last year’s sesquicentennial, Mayor Jeff Meyers said the final product justified the time and effort put into the park.

 

National Magazine Focuses on Museum
The Johnson County Museum was showcased in the May/June 2007 publication Museum News, a national magazine published by the American Association of Museums. This was a unique opportunity for the Johnson County Museum to gain national exposure for its 1950s All-Electric House, which opened at the Johnson County Museum in 1998. The exposure highlighted the Johnson County Museum staff inside the 1950s All-Electric House to promote the association’s Information Center, a resource to assist association members in developing policies related to their work.

 

Shawnee an All-America City Finalist
Shawnee was among the 21 finalists  for the National Civic League's 2007 All-America City Award competition.

The formal dedication of Splash Cove at the Jim Allen Aquatic Center ( King Avenue and Johnson Drive ) was held June 9, 2007.Call 913-631-7177 for operating hours and membership fees.

 
Fields For Freedom

The City of Shawnee is joining the City of Merriam in Fields for Freedom a patriotic display celebrating our freedom and honoring our Veterans.  Over 2,000 American flags will be displayed in downtown Shawnee and downtown Merriam, June 30th to July 7th.  This event is organized by citizens and business owners partnering with the Shawnee Downtown Business Association.

 

Wonderscope hosts "Hmong at Heart" Exhibit
Discover this little-known Asian culture through a unique interactive exhibit designed for young children. Journey through the daily life of the Hmong people from a village in Laos to a refugee camp in Thailand to a Hmong American home.
